
ACUPUNCTURE FOR BLEEDING DISORDERS
Bleeding disorders are generally caused by Spleen Deficiency or Heat Agitating the Blood. Though these conditions can be treated with acupuncture, herbal medicine is prefered in these cases.
Though needling in itself rarely causes bleeding, a misplaced needle could provoke bleeding. For this reason, auricular (ear) points are more often used rather than body points in patients where bleeding could be harmful.
The herbal formula Yunnan Baiyao is most often used in treating both internal and external bleeding because of its long history of safty and effectiveness.
Acupuncture Points Used In Bleeding Disorders.
The acupuncture points used will greatly depend on the condition being treated.
In early stage injury, acupuncture, because of its tendancy to vitalize the blood, will only be utilized after bleeding has been stopped, whereas in old injuries, acupuncture is supplemented with moxabustion (heat treatment) to vitalize and supply energy to a weakened area.
For internal bleeding,m many criterea will effect the choice of points. Internal bleeding cause by weakened vessels (Spleen Deficiency) is treated by tonifying spleen Points such as:
San Yin Jiao • Spleen 6 Three Yin Intersection. Meeting Point on the Spleen Channel with the Liver and Kidney Channels.
Location: On the medial leg, 3 cun above the medial malleolus, on the posterior border of the tibia.
Contraindication: Do Not Needle If Pregnancy is known or suspected.
Pi Shu • Bladder 20 Spleen Shu. Back Shu of the Spleen
Location: On the middle back, 1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of the eleventh thoracic vertebra (T11).
Chinese herbal medicine is very useful when bleeding is caused by heat over-invigorating the blood. A whole group of herbs are known to "Cool the Blood"
Acupuncture points to cool the blood could include:
He Gu • Large Intestine 4 Union Valley. Command Point of the Face and Mouth.
Location: On the dorsum of the hand, approximately at the midpoint of the second metacarpal bone, in the belly of the first interosseus dorsalis muscle.
Contraindication: Do Not Needle If Pregnancy is known or suspected.
Er Jian • Large Intestine 2 Second Space. Ying Spring Point on the Large Intestine Channel. Water Point on Metal Meridian.
Location: On the radial side of the second digit in slight flexion, in the depression anterior to the metacarpophalangeal joint.

Xue Hai • Spleen 10 Sea of Blood.
Location: On the medial thigh, with the knee in flexion, 2 cun superior to the superomedial angle of the patella, on vastus medialis muscle.
